Robert Lowell Miller, Sr,. (PaPa), 88, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 in Vidant Duplin Hospital, Kenansville, NC
Robert Lowell Miller, Sr. (Bobby) was born on April 23, 1934, to Callie and Ash Miller from Beulaville, NC. He was introduced to the Boy Scouts, Troop 47, at the age of thirteen, where he earned scouting's highest honor: Eagle Scout, the first in Duplin County. He was part of the Tuscarora Council, a member of the Order of the Arrow, and was sent to South Carolina to teach life-saving, boating, and swimming.
After high school he went to Tennessee to attend Nashville's Auto-Diesel College. In 1954 he joined the US Army, where he rose to the rank of E7 for his superb typing skills. Bobby chose not to re-enlist because of his mother's health and was honorably discharged in 1956.
On April 18, 1954, Bobby married Elsie Ruth Hall, and they began their family and a life-long dedication to community and faith. He was a dedicated member of Hallsville Presbyterian Church until his death. He was also a community businessman for over 40 years. He was owner of Miller Hardware on Main Street, which later changed to Miller True Value when his son, Bob Miller, joined the business. In 2003 Bobby and Bob opened Miller Sales and CarKare, where Bobby became the official office manager and greeter. He was always ready to entertain customers with Fox News, candy, and conversation. His work ethic was part of his core being, as he went to the "shop" Monday through Friday until his recent hospitalization.
In his semi-retirement, Bobby enjoyed some travel and golfing with his life-long friends. The love that he had for people and community was always at the forefront of his life. He believed that a person should always put others before himself and would do anything for his family. He often stated a vacation was not worthwhile without his children and grandchildren. Bobby believed that America was the greatest county on earth and was a true patriot.
Bobby is survived by his two children, Yvette Shallcross and her husband, Jason; and Bob Miller, Jr. and his wife, Gina. At the time of his death, he had four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Peyton Moser and his family, Priya and Mira; Alexandra Ash Miller-Dunn and her family, Dave and Coleman; Cole Shallcross and his wife, Savanna; and Allie Miller.
