John Luther Powell, Jr., born in Wallace, NC, on January 27th, 1934, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 91. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Luther Powell, Sr. and Martha Stewart Powell, his brother Stewart Powell, and his beloved wife, Iris Francis Powell.

Johnnie moved to Warsaw in 1955. He loved his church and his community. Johnnie served four terms as the Mayor of Warsaw and served as a deacon, choir member and tenor soloist at Warsaw Baptist Church for many years.

In July, Johnnie was proud to receive a certificate from St. John's Lodge, for 70 years of service as a Master Mason.

Johnnie is survived by his beloved nephews: Darron Ezzell (Bridget) of Elizabethtown, Darret Ezzell (Michelle) of Wallace, Kent Ezzell of Virginia Beach, and great nephews Blake Ezzell (Berta Galicia), Zachary Ezzell (Danni Huber), Leyton Ezzell, and great niece Haley Lanier (Jerry). He is also survived by great-great nephews, Thomas Lanier and Carson Lanier, and special friends Audrey McCullen and Becky O'Connell.

The funeral service will be held at Warsaw Baptist Church, 209 E. College St., Warsaw, NC, on Thursday, January 15th, 2026 at 1:00 pm. Visitation will be in in Powell Hall at the Church preceding the funeral service at 12:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Warsaw Baptist Church.
