Jo Ann Sumner, age 71, of Kenansville, NC, passed away on April 4, 2026 surrounded by family and friends. She was born on December 26,1954 in Burgaw, NC to James and Adell Lanier.

Jo Ann dedicated her life to caring for and nurturing children. She was the proud owner of Raggedy Ann Daycare for many years, where she created a loving, safe, and joyful environment for countless families. Her passion for helping children grow and learn continued through her work with Beulaville Elementary School, where she touched the lives of many students and colleagues.

She never met a stranger and was known for her selfless heart, always putting the needs of others before her own. Jo Ann loved people deeply and had a special gift for making everyone feel seen, valued, and cared for. Her kindness, patience, and compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who cherished her family deeply. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, taking Sunday drives with her husband, and her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and love. Her love lives on in every life she touched.

She is survived by her husband, Frankie Lynn Sumner, her daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Chris Kennedy, and two grandchildren, Eli and Evie Kennedy. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Elmer Lanier and Paris Adell Mobley Lanier.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at 4:00 pm at Sandy Plain Original Free Will Baptist Church with visitation following.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local charity or school, in honor of her lifelong dedication to children.
