Denise Lynn Souza, a beloved resident of Atkinson, North Carolina, passed away on March 4, 2024, at 8:30 am, due to complications from multiple myeloma. She was 66 years old.

Denise is survived by her loving partner of 17 years, Ken Hathaway. She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, cherished by her three children: Amanda M. Taylor of Burgaw, NC, Isaac J. Sandlin III of Corvallis, OR, and Sherman E. Sandlin of Beulaville, NC.

Born on August 3, 1957, in Jacksonville, NC, Denise was the daughter of Lester and Jean Souza. She was one of eight siblings and was preceded in death by her oldest sister, Roxanne Pross, who battled breast cancer in 1989. Following Denise were her siblings Kellie Whitlow of Richmond, VA, Cynthia Souza of Burgaw, NC, Whitney Souza of Richmond, VA, and Ashley Russell of Charles City, VA.
Not only was Denise a loving mother and partner but also a devoted pet owner. Her dog, Sam, held a special place in her heart, bringing her companionship and joy throughout the years.

Denise's passion for nature and plants led her to pursue an associate's degree in horticulture from Reynolds Community College. She excelled academically and was a proud member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society during her time at Reynolds. Denise was not only a talented gardener but also a skilled seamstress, and she had a passion for collecting and restoring antique furniture.

Denise will be remembered fondly for her creativity, advocacy, and generous spirit. She touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
